Installation Instructions for SharePoint 2007 SP2
By now, you have probably heard that SP2 for SharePoint 2007 is available (read the details here). The changes in SP2 cover three main areas:
- Performance and Availability Improvements
- Improved Interoperability
- Getting Ready for SharePoint Server 2010
The release of a new service pack is always a good time to assess your Disaster Recovery plans as well as the overall health of all your SharePoint environments (production, development, etc.). Take a moment and revisit disk space, Event log errors, content database configuration, etc. In a LinkedIn SharePoint group, I came across Chris Given’s blog post on installation instructions for SP2. Couple of things to note: (1) Super job by Chris. I ran through the steps and the instructions are spot on! (2) Executing this plan takes time, thoroughness and patience. Plan for this. See Chris’ details (“How to upgrade to SharePoint 2007 SP2 - Step by Step “) here.
I am particularly excited about the new stsadm command to check for SharePoint 2010 readiness (stsadm –o preupgradecheck). Yes, you should already begin to think about migration... because, yes, you will want to get to the next version quickly when you see what it gives your business users. The great news is there is plenty of time to course correct on anything the output report has flagged. Even if you don’t plan to get to SP2 for a few months, it is well worth the effort (now) to plan for it.
