SharePoint and Web 2.0

There is a big Enterprise Web 2.0 conference here in Boston this week.  One of the sessions is on how Wachovia is using SharePoint collaboration and social networking tools.  There is an interesting article in InformationWeek this week that covers this subject in more detail.  Read it here.  For me, there are two big takeaways...

1. As I have always felt, with the right planning and implementation, SharePoint can have a major impact on how an organization collects and shares information.  "To connect the bank's 100,000-plus employees, Wachovia is rolling out a slew of new collaboration tools anchored by Microsoft's Sharepoint Server. Under the plan, Wachovia is adding wikis, blogs, instant messaging, social networking sites and other Web 2.0 technologies to its traditional communications tools. "

2. Part of Wachovia's strategy is to implement Web 2.0 tools that younger works expect.  Younger staff is less accepting of older (inefficient) collaboration tools.  I like what Wachovia is doing; especially as it relates to engaging all staff... "Younger employees are assigned to teach senior staffers about the benefits of using collaborative networks. They're actually mentoring our Boomers."

As you begin or look to extend your SharePoint deployment strategy, don't forget to look toward the blog, wiki, and social networking components.  One of the ways to get better, more reliable, more consistent data is to move it closest to who knows it best...
