Quick SPS2003 Upgrade Trick

Recently, we were trying to do an inplace upgrade on a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal.  There were a couple of document libraries in the portal that contained a large (thousands) number of documents.  When we ran the upgrade process it failed with a "Average row size in the docs table too large. Adjust row count from 44445 to 2682916" error message.  What to do?

The answer turned out to be quite simple.  We reorganized the document library to move the files into folders (no more than 2000 per folder per Microsoft's recommendation).  We ran the upgrade again and all worked perfectly!  Very nice...

NOTE: Big thanks go to my friend Daniel on sharing this idea with me!
