"Locked for editing" warnings with Office documents in SharePoint

When opening documents from a Document Library by using the drop-down menu (e.g. “Edit in Microsoft Office Word“), I've received the occasional warning that says:

FileName is locked for editing by 'another user'.

Do you want to:

Open a Read Only copy
Create a local copy and merge your changes later
Receive notification when the original copy is available

This happens even though I am the user who previously opened the document.  Although there's a Knowledge Base article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899709/en-us) that says to simply wait another 10 minutes to release the document lock on the server, I've seen this message occur again an hour later, even after rebooting the computer.  I had previously selected the “Receive notification when the original copy is available“ option, and decided to choose that option again to keep the process alive.  So I then thought that there must be some kind of action that could force an unlock.  Lo and behold, as soon as I selected “Check In“ from the drop-down in the library, Word popped up the “<document name> is now available for editing“ dialog - BEFORE I selected a check-in choice from the three available on the Check In page!  I'm definitely going to remember that trick in the future, and I hope it will still work before the 10 minute lock down expires as well.

We are experiencing this problem nearly everyday, I have tried your solution but still the document is locked.  Does your solution still work for you?

I can I just reiterate the steps again.

1) Select Edit Document option from drop down

2) Select "Receive notification when the original copy is availableā€œ option

3) Select "Check In" option

Scousemouse: I haven't seen this issue in WSS 3.0 at all (with Office 2007 anyway).  It just seemed to happen to me with WSS 2.0 and Office 2003.

I have been using Office 2007/WSS 3.0 for several months without incident (related to checking out and editing documents anyway). Within the last week I've began encountering this problem. The MS KB documents that I've seen seem to involve the Office App crashing - this is not happening to me.

I'm curious as to why this would suddenly be a problem and am anxious to find a resolution.

Sorry PJ, I simply don't have enough information regarding your environment and situation to offer a suggestion on resolving your problem.  What are the KB articles that you've seen which refer to this issue?

I signed up for this forum so I could add to this topic.

I have Excel 2007 on my PC and trying to open Excel file in SharePoint portal. I was receiving same message -- even though I was cited as User who locked the file.

1. Use SharePoint dropdown list to 'Edit in MS Excel'

2. Select 'Notify' option

3. In browser window, select 'Checkout' from dropdown list.

4. Select 'Checkin' from dropdown list.

Mini-window pops up... Click 'Read-Write' to edit document.

HTH...
