Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

NOTE:
 Due to data loss with OfficeZealot's blog server, all comments posted between April 28 and June 8 , 2005 to any of my blog entries were inadvertently deleted.  The end of this blog entry contains the text of the comments applicable to this posting that I was able to recover.

I am an unabashed pack rat and organizer.  These traits come in very handy when you work with computers and software, because you need those skills to manage the phenomenal amount of information at our disposal.  Coupled with some pugnacious researching, I've managed to accumulate a fairly large repository of URLs to valuable SharePoint resources.

So, inspired by similar lists (Lamont Harrington's SharePoint 2003 Overview and Eli's SharePoint Resources), here are mine.  You can also download the zipped .htm file for importing into IE.

Enjoy!

Note: this list was built from an IE export; links at the root folder level are listed last after any sub-folders, so sometimes the parent folder might be misleading.  Also, I'm not going to bother fixing some of the other oddities from my paste job, like the crazy italics because of indented sections...

"hi Eric,
i want to create a user group in AD and assign it to 3 sites in sharepoint portal server subsites,(in this group i have some users)but i cant manage such group.
is there any solution.
tanks for your repling"

Wed 5/4/2005 8:58 AM Eric Legault http://blogs.officezealot.com/legault

Masood: What exactly do you mean by "can't manage such group"? Do you not have permissions to modify the security settings for those sites? Adding domain groups is just a matter of adding \\DOMAIN\GROUPNAME as a member.

Thu 5/5/2005 7:19 AM masood

"hi Eric,
I have permissions to midofy the security setting for those groups.My question is how i can create a user group in active directory and assign it to reader group of sharepoint portal server,i have some users with same permissions,i want to add them in a group and assign it to 3 sites,i have created a group in AD and assign it to user group of sharepoint portal server but the users which defined in that group cant access to portal site!
thanks for your repling."

Thu 5/5/2005 4:25 PM Eric Legault http://blogs.officezealot.com/legault

Masood: If you bundle these users into one AD group, you have to add that group into the appropriate site role for EACH site that you want to grant that group membership to. There's no group other than SPS Administrators that has blanket access to all WSS sites.

"Hey,
I have a question. We recently went to Sharepoint for our intranet. I am trying to figure out a way to use a page as a template within a workspace. If I open the site in frontpage and open a page and save it with a different name, it adds the page to the workspace, but all the web parts mirror the orriginal ones. When I add information to one page, all the pages that were created from the orriginal update to have the same information. I want them each to be unique, but have the same layout. Can you help me out?"

Thu 6/2/2005 4:00 PM Eric Legault http://blogs.officezealot.com/legault

"Joseph: I think what you want to do is create a Web Part Page (from the list in the Create page). You can specify the layout for the page from the predefined layouts that the wizard offers, and then add the web parts you need. This page is oddly enough stored as a file in the Document Library you specify.

To add a link to your site links bar along the top (Home - Documents and Lists - Create, etc.), you have to edit that bar with Front Page 2003 to point to the web part page file in the Document Library you saved it to.

Another approach is to use the Dynamic Web Templates feature in Front Page. You can lock down certain regions to prevent editing in any pages created from these DWT, and the pages are saved as regular .html files that don't need to be saved in a Document Library. However, these pages are different from Web Part Pages as they don't give you the Web Part Zones, but you can add web parts to the page (then they become .aspx pages)."

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

I am trying to get the roles for an user who is accessing Sharepoint using the SPS Object Model.

When the user is added as a member of the site explicitly, I am able to get his roles using CurrentUser.Roles.

When the user is added to a group and the group is added to the site without the user being added to, CurrentUser.Roles returns nothing.

Can you kindly get this query sent to the concerned @ Microsoft.

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

Masood: When you are in the Site Settings page, and you click on "Go to Site Administration", what is the title of that page? If it *doesn't* say "Top-level Site Administration", then you are in a sub site; galleries and site collections are managed from the top-level site only.

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

Ramin: I don't think you can change the text on that menu. However, the section "Customizing by Embedding Code" in the link below says:

"When you execute the constructor on the server, you can insert your own text into the page menu."

Whether this allows you to change the "Modify Shared Page" text or entries underneath it, I'm not sure.

However, if you want a different language displayed, shouldn't you be installing the appropriate international version of SharePoint?

I read the article "Create a login page for SharePoint Internet Site" but that was not useful.
Is this possible?
Alex

Simon: Yeah, I had to create a web app hosted in SharePoint once and pulled my hair out quite a bit. I don't remember exactly what I did, but I think this article covers the essentials:

Alex: You have to construct the .aspx page for a web application in a special way if it is to be hosted in SharePoint. The link in my previous comment is a good starting point.

April: User Groups as in local organizations that get together to discuss technology? It depends on your area - Google and see.

Or do you mean internet forums? If so, there's the USENET groups.

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

Hi Eric, thanks for this list. Very helpful.

I have a problem right now that I hope you could help me with. One of the requirements for this app is to remove any reference to any account name on the site for security reasons. (I've integrated Active Directory.)I need to replace this on the Posted By columns in document libraries, discussions, search results etc. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks.

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

Oops, I need to clarify this. Every instance of the account name appearing on the site, I should replace with email address. You see, account names being used are employee IDs and they don't want those displayed.

Hey Simon, I guess you just need a content Editor Web Part and referecne your aspx pages inside.
How were you able to add the ascx pages to your visual studio project?

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

You can use the Profile Editor to change how Active Directory fields are mapped, but I don't think you can ever prevent hiding the account name. This is usually not visible I believe, but anybody who has rights to manage security on a site will be able to see it.

The bigger issue is why did the person in charge of your network use sensitive information for the account names? Good software can't compensate for bad planning!

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

David: If I understand you correctly, you cannot prevent people from using any web parts that have been added to a virtual server web part gallery. You can, however, prevent them from modifying the web parts on a shared web part page by excluding them from the Web Designer role. You can also limit the web parts that are used for a particular site by deleting web parts from that site's web part gallery:

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

Kati: Sorry, you have to download the entire Office Service Pack. You should update your entire Office suite anyway if you haven't already. Service Pack 2 has just been released by the way.

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

Eric,
I have created a custom list in sharepoint and have attempted to establish a calculated column. The calculated field needs to search another drop-down field [Vehicle], in the same list and depending on the selection will return a unique text (i.e. dodge, chevy, ford, etc.) to display in this “calculated” field. The following formula will work but can only support 6 arguments and I need it to work with at least 7. Any suggestions? Thank you.

=IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("Green",[Vehicle])),"dodge",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("Red",[Vehicle])),"chevy",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("Brown",[Vehicle])),"toyota",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("Grey",[Vehicle])),"ford",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("Orange",[Vehicle])),"VW",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("Yellow",[Vehicle])),"Kia",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("Blue",[Vehicle])),"niasan",)))))))

Doug: Sorry, I'm stumped. I don't see how you can virtualize a one-to-one relationship between a calculated field and a regular field. This screams for multi-column fields.

# STS SDK

I've read an article stating that this could show me a lot of things on customizing my site. Is there a site from where I can download this? I checked MSDN, but it's not there. Or is this something I can buy?

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

PeteG: The SDK for SharePoint Portal Server or Windows SharePoint Services is really just documentation on how you can build ASP.NET, Windows or Web Services solutions using the programming interfaces to those products. The tools to create these solutions aren't free (usually Visual Studio .NET), but the documentation is:

Download details: SharePoint Products and Technologies 2003 SDK:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=aa3e7fe5-daee-4d10-980f-789b827967b0&DisplayLang=en

Online reference:

Welcome to the Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies 2003 Software Development Kit:

If you just want to custom the design and appearance of Portal areas or WSS Sites, then use Front Page. A great resource is this link:

# re: Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

Hi Eric, maybe you can help me with this.

I changed the following in ONET.XML so that the value displayed in the Posted
By column is the user's Email and not his Display Name.

<BaseType Title="Discussion Forum" ...>
<Metadata>
<Fields>
<Field ColName="tp_Email" ReadOnly="True" Type="User" List="UserInfo"
Name="Author" DisplayName="Posted By">
</Field>
</Fields>
</Metadata>
</BaseType>

I changed the ColName value from tp_Author to tp_Email which I know exists
as a column in the UserInfo table in the content database. However, after
saving change and resetting IIS, I get this error message: "The list does not
exist. It may have been deleted.".

What does the error message mean and how do I fix it to display what I want? Pls help. Thanks.
