Information Bridge serverless deployment

Just wanted to make sure that the Cache Tool we released in Tools part of the IBF Resource Kit is not gone unnoticed. This handy widget helps you deploy IBF client without a centralized server. Here is a summary of what the tool does:

The Microsoft® Office Information Bridge Cache Tool imports, removes, and browses metadata scopes in the client cache. Metadata scopes, along with their associated entities, can be imported from a metadata service or XML file into the client computer's local persistent cache. When searching for metadata, an Information Bridge client looks first in volatile cache, then in persistent cache, and, if unsuccessful, queries the metadata service. By importing metadata to the persistent cache, this tool enables clients to operate when a metadata server is not available.

So... is the service needed at all? Does it need to be active at least once? Does this mean I can use IBF in place of Smart Docuements?
