SharePoint Document Library Question

Shabaaz Baksh writes me the following question:
I have a security question on the Document Libraries section of the SharePoint Portal. Could you have granular permission set on different directory structure within the Document Libraries ares? If so, how would that be accomplish. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
