MS Office Photo Editor: I miss you and I am not alone!

I never really need to do a lot with editing images - just enough to be able to apply soften or shapen images, an occasional rotation, but the big one is being able to apply a transparency. For that reason, I was a big fan of Microsoft Office's (thrown-in, after-thought) Photo Editor that came with earlier versions. I remembering being really disappointed when I saw the installing a newer Office version would not only not build upon my existing PE version, but uninstall the current version without my permission!

Why I thought? It's not broken is it? Is there a compatibility issue? Don't think either of these but MS decided for me and left even me, a loyal, accepting Office Zealot, mad at this MS decision. Turns out that A) I was not the only one who came to rely on this little gem and B) I wasn't the only one a little perturbed about it being kidnapped.
