InfoPath: Deriving Values from Secondary Data Sources

After getting use to working with tools like MS Access, using InfoPath to link data between fields can seem a bit peculiar and even a touch difficult. A common theme in an InfoPath form is to have a value selected in a dropdown list determine the value in a text box field or other fields.

For example, I read in a newsgroup post that someone wanted to allow users to select a city and have the state automatically populated in a text box. Seems like this would be easy, but its not as straight forward as you may expect.

Instead of posting the details in intricate steps here, I decided to simply post a working sample of how you would do this and let the example be your guide if you choose to figure this out.

(Honestly, I just didn?t have the time or temperament to drudge thru writing about Secondary Data Sources, OnAfterChange events, XPath expressions and the like? I figure a sample is worth a 1,000 words, right?)

So here is a sample works off of the Northwinds database which should allow you to get the gist of doing this in your own InfoPath forms: Download InfoPath Form
